Uncovering Industrial Symbiosis: Mechanisms, Drivers, and Hidden Opportunities
This study explores the underlying mechanisms and enabling conditions that facilitate the emergence of industrial symbiosis within industrial systems. It investigates how resource exchange networks develop, often organically, through interactions among firms seeking economic and environmental benefits. The paper highlights the importance of factors such as trust, information sharing, geographic proximity, and institutional support in uncovering and sustaining symbiotic relationships. By analyzing case studies, the research reveals that many symbiotic opportunities remain hidden and can be activated through targeted facilitation and improved coordination, contributing to more efficient and sustainable industrial practices.
