TRIS supports five European regions in integrating industrial symbiosis into policy frameworks to enhance SME competitiveness and resource efficiency. It identifies barriers, engages stakeholders and promotes standardised practices. Building on Climate-KIC experience, TRIS fosters cooperation, launches SME initiatives and reinforces IS within regional and European strategies (2016-2021).
TRIS – Transition Regions towards Industrial Symbiosis
The TRIS project (Transition Regions towards Industrial Symbiosis), funded by the Interreg Europe programme, supports regional authorities in accelerating the adoption of industrial symbiosis as a driver for circular economy and sustainable regional development. The project focuses on improving regional policy instruments to better enable collaboration between industries, fostering the exchange of resources such as materials, energy, water, and by-products.
TRIS promotes interregional cooperation and policy learning among participating regions, facilitating the identification and transfer of best practices, governance models, and strategic approaches to industrial symbiosis. By engaging stakeholders from public authorities, industry, and research organisations, the project strengthens institutional capacity and supports the integration of symbiosis principles into regional development strategies.
Through peer reviews, policy analysis, and the development of regional action plans, TRIS contributes to more effective and coherent policy frameworks. The project ultimately enhances resource efficiency, reduces environmental impacts, and boosts the competitiveness and resilience of regional economies, supporting Europe’s transition towards a circular and low-carbon future.
