IS2H4C promotes large-scale industrial symbiosis in heavily industrialised regions by establishing Hubs for Circularity in Germany, the Netherlands, Spain and Türkiye. Combining advanced technologies with cross-sector collaboration, it builds circular ecosystems supported by a digital H4C platform to optimise resource sharing and reduce energy use, waste and emissions (2024-2028).
IS2H4C – Sustainable Circular Economy Transition: From Industrial Symbiosis to Hubs for Circularity
The IS2H4C project aims to accelerate the transition towards a circular economy by evolving industrial symbiosis initiatives into fully integrated Hubs for Circularity (H4C). The project focuses on creating systemic and large-scale solutions that connect industries, regions, and value chains to optimise the use of materials, energy, water, and by-products.
IS2H4C develops and demonstrates innovative approaches that combine industrial symbiosis practices with digital tools, governance frameworks, and new business models. By fostering collaboration among industrial actors, public authorities, and local stakeholders, the project supports the transformation of industrial areas into circular hubs with enhanced resource efficiency and reduced environmental impact.
Through large-scale demonstrations and replication strategies, IS2H4C validates the environmental, economic, and social benefits of circular industrial hubs. The project also addresses regulatory, organisational, and market barriers, contributing to the widespread deployment of Hubs for Circularity and supporting Europe’s transition towards a climate-neutral, resource-efficient, and competitive industrial system aligned with the European Green Deal.
