Shaping symbiosis in bio-based industrial ecosystems based on circular by-design supply chains (SYMBIO)

SYMBIO equips European regions with AI-driven tools and methodologies to design circular, bio-based business models rooted in industrial symbiosis. It develops and validates 10 profitable and sustainable models and introduces a system to measure IS impacts. Tested in 12 pilot regions, the project applies a quadruple-helix approach to foster inclusive green growth (2024-2026).

SYMBIO – Synergies for Industrial Symbiosis Uptake and Circular Value Chains

The SYMBIO project aims to accelerate the uptake of industrial symbiosis across Europe by fostering synergies between industries, regions, and innovation actors. The project focuses on enabling the development of circular value chains through the efficient exchange and valorisation of materials, energy, water, and by-products.

SYMBIO adopts a systemic and collaborative approach, bringing together industrial stakeholders, research organisations, and public authorities to identify and implement symbiotic opportunities. It supports the creation of enabling conditions for industrial symbiosis, including improved governance frameworks, stakeholder engagement, and alignment with regional and European strategies.

Through coordination, knowledge sharing, and the development of practical tools and guidelines, SYMBIO enhances the capacity of stakeholders to implement circular solutions. The project contributes to scaling up industrial symbiosis practices, strengthening resource efficiency, reducing environmental impacts, and supporting the transition towards a competitive, low-carbon, and circular European economy.
