This thesis develops innovative production-planning models tailored to industrial symbiosis contexts. It introduces a by-product-integrated lot-sizing model and a two-level decision framework aligning supplier and receiver strategies. The study analyses computational complexity and proposes dynamic programming and Lagrangian approaches. Collaboration models—centralised, decentralised, game-theoretic and contract-based—are evaluated for economic and environmental performance.
Industrial Symbiosis and Territorial Dynamics: A Multi-Level Analysis of Sustainable Industrial Transitions
This doctoral thesis investigates industrial symbiosis as a key mechanism for enabling sustainable industrial transitions, with a particular focus on its territorial and multi-level dimensions. The research explores how local, regional, and institutional contexts shape the emergence and development of symbiotic exchanges between firms. It adopts an interdisciplinary approach, combining insights from industrial ecology, economic geography, and sustainability transitions theory. Through empirical case studies, the thesis analyzes the role of proximity, governance structures, and stakeholder interactions in facilitating or constraining industrial symbiosis initiatives. It also examines the importance of intermediaries and public policies in supporting coordination and long-term collaboration. The findings highlight that industrial symbiosis is not only a technical or economic process but also a socio-institutional one, deeply embedded in specific territorial contexts. The study contributes to a better understanding of how place-based strategies can foster circular economy practices and more resilient industrial systems.
