INITIATE develops a symbiotic process to convert steel industry residual gases into urea and ammonia, reducing energy consumption, emissions, raw material use and waste. The project produces a commercialisation roadmap and validates system performance through dynamic modelling and life-cycle assessment aligned with ISO 14404 standards (2020-2026).
INITIATE – Industrial Symbiosis for the Transition to a Circular and Climate-Neutral Industry
The INITIATE project aims to accelerate the transition of Europe’s process industries towards circularity and climate neutrality by advancing industrial symbiosis solutions at large scale. The project focuses on enabling the efficient use of resources through the integration and optimisation of material, energy, water, and by-product flows within and across industrial sectors.
INITIATE develops and demonstrates innovative symbiosis concepts in real industrial environments, combining technological solutions with systemic approaches such as process integration, digitalisation, and cross-sector collaboration. The project places strong emphasis on creating viable business cases and fostering cooperation among industrial actors to unlock new value chains and improve overall sustainability performance.
Through demonstration activities and stakeholder engagement, INITIATE validates the environmental, economic, and operational benefits of industrial symbiosis. It also addresses key barriers to implementation, including regulatory, organisational, and market challenges, contributing to the large-scale deployment of circular and low-carbon industrial systems in line with European Green Deal objectives.
