SYMSITES enhances local and regional industrial symbiosis by developing technologies and stakeholder engagement strategies to improve resource efficiency. By valorising underused materials and energy streams, it contributes to circular economy goals. Implemented in four diverse European regions, the project fosters collaborative, closed-loop systems (2022-2026).
SYMSITES – Industrial Symbiosis at Process Industry Sites
The SYMSITES project aims to demonstrate and optimise industrial symbiosis solutions at the level of individual process industry sites, supporting the transition towards circular and climate-neutral production systems. The project focuses on enhancing the efficient use of resources by enabling the exchange and recovery of materials, energy, water, and by-products within and across industrial facilities.
SYMSITES develops and implements advanced symbiosis concepts in large-scale industrial environments, integrating technological innovations with process optimisation and digital tools. The project adopts a site-based approach, addressing operational, technical, and organisational challenges to improve performance and sustainability in energy-intensive industries.
Through demonstration activities in real industrial sites, SYMSITES validates the environmental and economic benefits of industrial symbiosis, including reduced emissions, lower resource consumption, and improved competitiveness. The project also tackles regulatory and market barriers, contributing to the wider deployment of circular solutions in European process industries and supporting the objectives of the European Green Deal.
