Industrial Symbiosis for Regional Sustainable Growth and a Resource Efficient Circular Economy (SYMBI)

SYMBI strengthens regional industrial symbiosis and circular economy policies across seven countries, supporting Europe’s resource-efficiency goals. It promotes material and energy savings, the development of secondary resource markets and reduced import dependency. The project helps regions lower costs and emissions, increase waste valorisation, stimulate green procurement and raise public awareness (2016-2021).

SYMBI – Industrial Symbiosis for Regional Resource Efficiency and Circular Economy

The SYMBI project, funded under the Interreg Europe programme, supports regional authorities in improving policy instruments that foster industrial symbiosis and resource efficiency. The project focuses on enhancing the capacity of public administrations to promote cooperation between industries, enabling the exchange of materials, energy, water, and by-products across sectors.

By facilitating interregional learning and the sharing of best practices, SYMBI helps participating regions identify effective policy approaches and governance models to accelerate the transition towards a circular economy. The project engages stakeholders from industry, research, and public institutions to co-develop strategies that integrate industrial symbiosis into regional development frameworks.

Through policy analysis, peer reviews, and action plans, SYMBI contributes to the improvement of regional policy instruments, supporting more efficient use of resources, reduced environmental impact, and increased competitiveness of local economies. The project ultimately strengthens the role of industrial symbiosis as a driver for sustainable regional growth and innovation across Europe.
