Industrial Symbiosis as a Driver for Circular Economy: A Systematic Analysis of Opportunities and Challenges
This study examines the role of industrial symbiosis as a key enabler of the circular economy, providing a systematic analysis of its potential to improve resource efficiency and reduce environmental impacts. The article reviews existing literature and case studies to identify common patterns, success factors, and limitations in the implementation of symbiotic practices across different industrial sectors. It highlights how the exchange of materials, energy, water, and by-products between firms can generate economic, environmental, and social benefits. The research also investigates the main barriers to adoption, including technological constraints, lack of information, regulatory challenges, and limited collaboration among stakeholders. Furthermore, it discusses the importance of policy support, digital tools, and facilitation mechanisms in scaling industrial symbiosis initiatives. The findings contribute to a deeper understanding of how industrial symbiosis can accelerate the transition towards more sustainable and circular production systems
