This thesis investigates industrial–urban symbiosis among food and beverage SMEs in Sweden using mixed methods. It analyses resource inputs, outputs and potential exchanges among three companies, revealing opportunities to valorise organic waste, surplus heat and CO₂. The study underscores the importance of collaboration, circular solutions and supportive policies in sustainable urban food systems.

Industrial Symbiosis and Regional Development: Exploring Collaborative Pathways for Circular Economy

This study examines the role of industrial symbiosis in fostering regional development and supporting the transition towards a circular economy. It explores how collaboration between firms within specific geographic contexts enables the exchange of resources, including materials, energy, and by-products, contributing to increased efficiency and reduced environmental impact. The research adopts a regional and systemic perspective, analyzing how local conditions, institutional frameworks, and stakeholder networks influence the emergence and success of symbiotic initiatives. Through empirical investigation, the study identifies key drivers such as proximity, trust, and facilitation mechanisms, as well as barriers including regulatory constraints, limited awareness, and coordination challenges. The findings highlight the importance of place-based approaches and governance structures in enabling industrial symbiosis, emphasizing its potential to enhance both environmental sustainability and regional economic resilience.
