BAMB – Buildings As Material Banks for a Circular Built Environment

The BAMB (Buildings As Material Banks) project aims to enable a systemic shift in the construction sector by promoting buildings as material banks within a circular economy framework. The project develops and demonstrates innovative solutions to facilitate the reuse, recovery, and high-value recycling of building materials, reducing waste generation and dependence on virgin resources.

Central to the BAMB approach is the integration of reversible building design and digital tools such as material passports, which document the characteristics, value, and reuse potential of construction materials. These tools support more informed decision-making across the building lifecycle, enhancing transparency and enabling new circular business models.

Through real-life pilot projects and case studies, BAMB validates design-for-disassembly strategies, adaptable building systems, and new value chains for secondary materials. The project also addresses regulatory, economic, and market barriers, fostering stakeholder collaboration and supporting the transition towards a resource-efficient, low-carbon, and circular built environment at European scale.
