UNIDO promotes inclusive and sustainable industrial development by improving resource efficiency, cleaner production and environmental performance. Since 2010, it has supported eco-industrial park development through pilot projects in India and Tunisia, later expanding globally under the joint RECP Programme with UNEP. More than 33 parks in 12 countries have been assessed, with pilot actions currently underway in Asia, Africa and Latin America.
Implementing Eco-Industrial Parks: A Practical Framework for Industrial Symbiosis and Sustainable Development
This handbook developed by UNIDO provides a comprehensive framework for the planning, development, and implementation of eco-industrial parks (EIPs) as a tool to promote sustainable industrialization. It outlines practical guidelines for integrating environmental, economic, and social considerations into industrial park design and management, with a strong emphasis on resource efficiency and industrial symbiosis. The document explores how industries can collaborate to optimize the use of energy, water, and materials, reducing waste and emissions while generating shared economic benefits. It also addresses key enabling conditions, including governance structures, policy support, financing mechanisms, and stakeholder engagement. Through case studies and best practices, the handbook demonstrates how EIPs can contribute to climate resilience, competitiveness, and inclusive growth, supporting global sustainability agendas such as the circular economy and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
