Digital Platform for Industrial Symbiosis & Circular Economy (SYMBIOS)

Symbios analyses industrial symbiosis mechanisms and skills gaps in the agrifood and leather sectors and develops a digital platform for awareness, training and matchmaking. Research activities include focus groups, surveys and literature reviews, leading to a comprehensive skills model. The platform offers an IS MOOC and a networking community to foster collaboration and learning (2025-2028).

SYMBIO – Industrial Symbiosis Skills for Vocational Education and Training

The SYMBIO project, funded under the Erasmus+ programme, aims to strengthen vocational education and training (VET) systems by integrating industrial symbiosis and circular economy principles into training pathways. The project addresses the increasing demand for skilled professionals capable of supporting resource-efficient, low-carbon, and sustainable industrial practices.

SYMBIO brings together VET providers, industry stakeholders, and research organisations to co-develop innovative curricula, training modules, and learning tools focused on industrial symbiosis. The project promotes practical, work-based learning approaches that enable learners to identify and implement symbiotic solutions, such as the exchange and valorisation of materials, energy, water, and by-products.

Through pilot training activities, digital learning environments, and stakeholder collaboration, SYMBIO enhances the relevance of VET systems to labour market needs. The project contributes to building a skilled workforce able to support the transition towards circular industrial ecosystems and sustainable economic development in Europe.
