Buildings as Material Banks: Integrating Materials Passports with Reversible Building Design to Optimise Circular Industrial Value Chains (BAMB)

BAMB advances circular construction by reducing construction and demolition waste and limiting virgin material use. It introduces two core concepts—materials passports and reversible building design—to facilitate reuse, disassembly and high-value recovery. Through ICT tools, pilot buildings and innovative business models, BAMB promotes circular value chains and systemic change (2015-2019).

SYMBIOSIS – Industrial Symbiosis for Resource Efficiency and Sustainable Process Industries

The SYMBIOSIS project aims to foster the adoption of industrial symbiosis as a strategic approach to enhance resource efficiency and sustainability in European process industries. By facilitating the exchange of materials, energy, water, and by-products between different industrial actors, the project supports the transition towards more integrated and circular production systems.

The project develops methodologies and tools to identify, evaluate, and implement symbiotic relationships both within industrial sites and across sectors. These include innovative approaches to process integration, waste valorisation, and the optimisation of resource flows, supported by data-driven analysis and decision-support systems.

Through pilot actions and real industrial applications, SYMBIOSIS demonstrates the environmental and economic benefits of collaborative resource management. It also addresses key barriers—such as regulatory constraints, organisational challenges, and market limitations—promoting the scalability and replicability of industrial symbiosis solutions across Europe. The project contributes to the development of a low-carbon, resource-efficient, and competitive industrial landscape aligned with EU sustainability objectives.
