The BIS project promotes industrial symbiosis in the Baltic Sea region by facilitating partnerships among companies. Through dialogue-based screenings involving over 150 firms, it gathered detailed data on resource use and losses. The outcome is a practical tool that enables companies to assess and unlock their symbiosis potential (2019-2021).
BIS – Baltic Industrial Symbiosis for Regional Resource Efficiency
The BIS (Baltic Industrial Symbiosis) project, funded under the Interreg Baltic Sea Region programme, promotes industrial symbiosis as a strategic approach to enhance resource efficiency and circular economy practices across the Baltic region. The project focuses on supporting small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and regional stakeholders in identifying and implementing symbiotic solutions based on the exchange of materials, energy, water, and by-products.
BIS develops practical tools, methodologies, and support schemes to facilitate cooperation between companies, helping them uncover new business opportunities while reducing waste and resource consumption. A key aspect of the project is the establishment of regional support structures and advisory services that enable companies to engage in industrial symbiosis processes effectively.
Through pilot actions, training activities, and transnational cooperation, BIS demonstrates how industrial symbiosis can strengthen innovation capacity, improve environmental performance, and enhance the competitiveness of SMEs. The project contributes to the transition towards a more sustainable, circular, and resource-efficient economy in the Baltic Sea Region.
