This study identifies five waste streams with high industrial symbiosis potential and determines the stakeholders most likely to benefit. Drawing on literature reviews, data analysis and practitioner interviews, it prioritises mixed food and vegetal waste, construction and demolition mineral waste, plastics, wood waste and non-scrap metal waste. These streams offer strong opportunities to enhance both competitiveness and environmental performance.

By mapping material flows and assessing sectoral interactions, the study highlights how underutilized resources can be transformed into valuable inputs for other industries, contributing to waste reduction and economic gains. Furthermore, it explores the main drivers and barriers influencing the implementation of industrial symbiosis, including technological, regulatory, and organizational factors. The findings emphasize the significant environmental and economic benefits achievable through increased collaboration between industries, supporting the transition towards a circular economy and reinforcing EU sustainability objectives.
