Fostering Industrial Symbiosis for a sustainable resource intensive indsutry across the extended construction value chain (FISSAC)

FISSAC develops and pilots an industrial symbiosis model for the construction sector to advance zero-waste practices and circular economy principles. The project delivers a methodology and digital platform designed to overcome technical and organisational barriers and enable replication. Demonstrations include closed-loop recycling systems, eco-designed building products and real-scale validation through living labs (2015-2020).

FISSAC – Industrial Symbiosis for Circular Economy in the Construction Value Chain

The European project FISSAC (Fostering Industrial Symbiosis for a Sustainable Resource-Intensive Industry Across the Extended Construction Value Chain) develops and demonstrates an innovative industrial symbiosis model aimed at promoting a “zero waste” approach in resource-intensive sectors within the construction value chain. The project integrates both technological and non-technological solutions to enable material loop closure, reducing the consumption of virgin raw materials, emissions, and waste, while supporting the transition towards a circular economy.

Through the development of a dedicated methodology and software platform, FISSAC facilitates the identification and implementation of synergies across different industrial sectors, including metals, cement, ceramics, chemicals, and construction. This approach supports decision-making processes based on material flow analysis and environmental impact assessment.

FISSAC has also validated, at industrial scale and through real case studies, a range of eco-innovative products such as eco-cements, green concrete, ceramics, and composite materials, designed according to a life-cycle approach. The model has been tested through living labs and replicability assessments, addressing regulatory, social, and market barriers, with the aim of enabling the large-scale adoption of industrial symbiosis at regional and European levels.
